"The Halloway Family does not seek the throne—they are the throne. Where their name is spoken, loyalty follows, and kingdoms remember who truly rules."
Words spoken about the Halloway Family

The Halloway Family or Halloway Bloodline (Latin: Via Sacra, Ancient Greek: Ἱερὰ Ὁδός, Modern Greek: Ιερή Οδός, Late Roman: Strāta Sancta, Italian: Sacravia (feminine) Sacravio (masculine) Russian: Священный Путь, Elder Futhark: ᚺᚨᛚᛚᛟᚹᚨᛁ) also known as House Halloway or the Halloway Dynasty respectively is a family of nobles, royals, ancient and powerful family of witches and heretics dating back at least to the Kingdom of Sythria England. At the beginning of the 11th century, the family were witches until the loss of Esther and Mikael's youngest child, Henrik, to a werewolf attack spurred them to use Esther's magic to turn Mikael and the rest of their living children into the world's first vampires, using the blood of the Halloway Sibling binding them to the spell making the world's first Heretics, from whom technically most vampires are also descended. The Original heretics are known as some of the most powerful supernatural beings in the world, but the Halloway family is also known for having members who are siphoners and hybrids. Alongside the Bennett, Salvatore, Petrova, and Mikaelson families, the Halloway Family is revered as one of the most powerful and respected lineages ever to walk the supernatural world.

The Halloway's are one of the main families in The Vampire Diaries and a matriarchal bloodline of powerful witches, some born with the rare ability to siphon magic known as siphoner and foresight known as a foresighter. The family originated from Ancient England, then eventually settled in Southern England, Sythria. They have ruled as Sythria's King's and Queen's and maintained their secrecy of their magical talents for over many generations. The Halloway family is known to be dominated by women.

However the bloodline and dynasty ended after an unaware assassination was carried out of the children[1] of the last king and queen of Sythria, King Stephan I & Queen Amorette Halloway.

Origin[]

The Halloway Family traces its origins back to ancient England, where it was founded by a formidable and enigmatic witch named Esme Halloway, whose bloodline would shape the course of magical history. Esme was revered and feared for her mastery over elemental magic and her rare gift of foresight, often referred to as “The Witch of the Veil” due to her ability to walk between the world of the living and the realm of spirits. She was known for striking a delicate balance between light and dark magic, refusing to bind herself to either, which set the tone for generations of Halloways to come. Over time, her descendants inherited various fragments of her immense power, but a unique trait began to emerge in select bloodlines: the ability to siphon magic from external sources rather than generate their own. This rare ability, while limiting in some aspects, granted them an edge—allowing them to temporarily wield powers far beyond their own natural capacity, drawing from witches, enchanted objects, or even ley lines. The Halloways became both revered and distrusted in magical circles, feared for their ability to take what wasn’t theirs yet admired for their intelligence, discipline, and magical innovation. Legends say Esme bound a part of her essence to an ancestral grimoire known as the Halloway Codex, which only responds to direct descendants who share her spiritual alignment. Though scattered across time and place, every true Halloway carries a mark—a crescent-shaped birthmark behind the left ear—believed to be Esme’s final spell, a brand to remind the world that her legacy is eternal.

History & Royalty[]

After leaving their ancestral home in northern England, the Halloway Dynasty began with King Aleksander Halloway, a formidable and enigmatic figure who led his family from distant lands to the southern reaches of England, where they conquered the lush and bountiful territory known as Sythria. With unmatched strategy and an army whispered to be aided by ancient forces, Aleksander seized control of Sythria’s largest region and established the Halloways as its ruling house. Declaring himself King of Sythria, Aleksander cloaked the true nature of his bloodline in secrecy, for he and his kin possessed a dormant magical essence—an ancient, volatile power passed down through generations. Determined to protect and preserve this mystical lineage, he orchestrated controlled inbreeding within the family, believing that only purity of blood could safeguard the Halloway magic from dilution or disappearance. His rule was long and prosperous, yet marred by rumors of forbidden rituals and concealed tragedies within the royal household. Over the centuries, the Halloways flourished as monarchs, cementing their legacy with towering keeps, arcane symbols woven into their banners, and a throne that pulsed faintly with power known only to those of Halloway blood. The Halloway court became a hidden sanctuary for magical scholars, enchanted relics, and powerful enchantments, all under the careful watch of a secret council known only as The Veiled Circle. As the dynasty expanded, so did their influence, and for generations, the Halloways reigned over Sythria with a blend of regal charisma and quiet sorcery. Royal blood was protected with strict alliances and magically bound vows, ensuring that their legacy—and their magical lineage—would remain unbroken. Even as monarchs changed and kingdoms rose and fell beyond Sythria, the Halloways endured—feared, revered, and wrapped in an ever-growing shroud of myth that kept their true strength forever out of reach.

Relatives[]

  • Volturi Family: The Halloway family shares a rare and sacred bond with the Volturi, the only non-magical bloodline they have ever trusted or married into. Despite the Volturi's lack of supernatural abilities, the Halloways saw in them a strength of will, loyalty, and strategic brilliance unmatched by any magical family. This alliance was forged not through power, but through loyalty and an unwavering sense of honor that earned the Halloways’ guarded trust. Over generations, marriages between the two families became symbols of unity and mutual respect, rather than mere political convenience. The Volturi became the Halloways’ most trusted kin, offering protection and counsel in return for magical favor and legacy. While other magical families envied or questioned the bond, none could deny its effectiveness or endurance. The Halloways, known for their secrecy and caution, consider the Volturi an extension of their lineage through shared loyalty rather than shared power. To this day, the two families move as one—bound not by magic, but by something stronger: trust.

Surname[]

  • The surname Halloway is believed to be a variant of the English surname "Holloway", with the spelling "Halloway" arising through regional dialects, phonetic spelling, and literary adaptations over time.
  • "Holloway" originates from the Old English words:
    • "holh" (meaning “a hollow” or “depression”)
    • and "weg" (meaning “a way” or “road”).
  • Combined, "holh weg" meant "a sunken road", "a road in a hollow", or "a road through a valley or wooded area."
  • These types of paths were common in the English countryside and often associated with ancient routes, trade paths, or even pilgrimage ways.
  • Holloways were often ancient, narrow, and tree-lined paths worn down over centuries by travelers, carts, and livestock. These routes can still be found in parts of rural England today.
  • The surname was likely first applied to someone living near or along such a road, or perhaps someone who maintained or worked on the route.
  • The name Holloway appears in various medieval records, particularly in Southern England, where the terrain made such roads common.[3]
    • Spelling was highly fluid in the Middle Ages, so variations were natural over time.
  • Halloway likely emerged as a literary, phonetic, or regional variant of Holloway during the Early Modern English period (15th–17th centuries).
    • The "a" in "Halloway" may have been influenced by the word "hallow", meaning holy or sacred.
    • This adds an almost mystical or spiritual connotation to the name, especially in folklore or gothic literature.
  • Over time and across regions, several variants of the surname have appeared. These include:

Variant

  • Holloway
  • Halloway
  • Hollway
  • Hollowaye
  • Hollaway
  • Hollway/Holoway

Lore

  • Most common and historically rooted form.
  • Less common, may appear in literary or American records.
  • Found in Middle English and early post-medieval texts.
  • Archaic or poetic rendering.
  • Regional spelling variant, found in U.S. and UK.
  • Simplified versions, often due to pronunciation shifts.
  • United Kingdom: Predominantly in southern counties—Somerset, Dorset, Devon, Hampshire, and Oxfordshire.
  • United States: Brought over by English settlers; the variant Halloway became more common in certain regions, possibly due to dialect and record-keeping differences.
  • Australia, Canada, South Africa: Spread through British colonial migration.
