“ | "You and I both know what it's like to lose control, Stefan. The difference is, I stopped pretending I could outrun it. No one could help me out of it, I had to figure it out myself — but this time, I have you to thank, Stefan. Without you, I'd be a blood-draining, murderous and psychopathic freak." | ” |
— Maddie to Stefan in The World Has Turned And Left Me Here
|
Madeleine Danielle Mikaelson-Gilbert (née Westwood) (Anglo-Saxon Futhorc: ᛗᚨᛞᛖᛚᛁᚾᛖ) is one of the most powerful tribrids and one of the main female characters in The Vampire Diaries and a recurring character in Legacies. Even though she was the sassy and over confident one of the group, she gave good advice and was a very astute person. She first appeared in the first season as a guest star and was presented as an elusive, enigmatic character, only seen as a silhouette, shadowed figure in the episode Lost Girls, responsible for turning and killing Vicki Donovan, she also returned in the episode Brave New World and turned Caroline Forbes. This was all uncovered in the episode Rose which also marks her first physical appearance. Although she started out as enemies with Elena and her group, she is very close with everyone and eventually gained their trust, ultimately resulting in them becoming very close, like family. Her best friends include Caroline Forbes, Elena Gilbert, Matt Donovan, Damon Salvatore, and her then boyfriend, now husband, Jeremy Gilbert. She is also close friends with Stefan Salvatore and Tyler Lockwood. She was also married to Kol Mikaelson briefly in the sixth season.
She is a member of the Mikaelson Family from her previous marriage to Kol and from her daughter. She is also currently a member of the Gilbert Family due to her marriage to Jeremy.
Early Life[]
Born into a wealthy noble family in Mystic Falls, Madeleine grew up surrounded by privilege. Her father, a mortal who carried the werewolf gene, and her mother, a powerful witch, who often practiced witchcraft with her two daughters.
When Madeleine was 14 in 1002, her younger sister, Clara went missing without a trace. The whole village went searching but there was no luck. For centuries, it was deemed as a mystery, until in the episode Homecoming, it was revealed that Klaus and his allies were partly responsible. Ever since Maddie heard about it, she wanted her revenge, but over time, has decided to put it all behind her and to forget about her haunting past and Klaus' wrongdoings.
At age 18, Madeleine fell deeply in love with Zachariah Cadell, a charming English scholar. They quickly married, ready to start a new chapter of their lives together until her parents hired Margaret, a vampire, to turn Madeleine for her own protection as a group of vampires and werewolves, were after her family. Also, seeing as their daughter went missing, they couldn't risk it happening to the only child they had left, so a week after Maddie's 19th birthday, she reluctantly agreed to the transformation, becoming a vampire, on November 9th, 1007. She was one of the first hybrids to ever exist, being a vampire-witch hybrid.
By the mid 1400's, Madeleine had spent centuries masturing her craft. She had settled in Italy under the alias, Magdalena di Rossi, posing as a noblewoman with healing knowledge that made her a sought-after companion to the elite. During this time, she fell in love with a mortal man, Giulio de Medici who was also an artist. Their love was passionate but ultimately doomed. Despite her best efforts to keep him from discovering her true nature, he uncovered her secret one fateful night. Giulio saw his girlfriend who he thought was human-- a mortal, draining their handmaiden of her blood, ultimately killing her. Though he swore to love her regardless, the fear in his eye shattered Madeleine's resolve. Rather than compel him into false acceptance, she fled, leaving behind a single letter expressing her love. This heartbreak solidified her belief that she could never truly belong to any one time or place.
She had formed a close friendship with a young witch, Beatrice Montague, whom she mentored in secret. However, the Montague family was under the suspision of witchcraft, and in an act of desperation, Bea betrayed Madeleine's trust, exposing her as a creature of darkness, an unbalance in nature to the authorities. Madeleine barely escaoed, but Beatrice was burned at the stake, along with her family. Though she had every reason to hate Beatrice, Madeleine instead blamed herself for allowing their friendship to exist in a time where such relationships could only end a tragedy.
Her Parents Death[]
Maddie's father, a carrier of the werewolf gene, was killed in 1045 by a group of vengeful vampires seeking to eliminate allies of the Mikaelsons, as he had provided safe haven to Mikael's family during their early years as vampires.
Her mother, a powerful witch, sacrificed herself in a binding spell to protect Maddie from the same attackers along with other supernatural forces, this created a barrier allowing her daughter to escape. This event left an everlasting mark on her, driving her to seek vengeance against the supernatural forces responsible and solidifying her connection to the Originals through her family's history.
Becoming Klaus' Prisoner[]
Madeleine had never intended to feel so attached and to fall in love with Klaus Mikaelson. In the 13th century, he was a force of nature — ruthless, majestic and utterly untamed — but beneath the bloodshed and chaos, she saw something else. A man burdened by loneliness, desperate to carve out his own legacy in a world that feared him. At first, she was merely drawn to his power, fascinated to find a hybrid, someone like her. She was also allured at the way he commanded a room, how even kings and warriors cowered in his presence. But the came the moments in between — the rare flickers of vulnerability, the dead of night. He made her feel invincible, as if she belonged by his side, as if she was more than just another name in history.
But love, she learned was a dangerous game with Klaus. The moment she tried to leave, to break free from the violent world he had built, he refused to let her go. Her love had made her invaluable, and in his eyes, that meant she was his. So, he locked her away, a prisoner in gilded chains, swearing that if she could not love him as he wished, then she would remain his in the only way left to him — by force.
Zachariah's Death[]
As a now Vampire-Witch hybrid, Madeleine struggled with her new existence and feared the mortality of her human husband, Zachariah. In desperation, she turned to her mother's magical teachings and devised a spell that would make him immortal. However, Mary Tristé, a fellow witch and French noblewoman living in England, secretly fell in love with Zachariah. Consumed by jealousy and a twisted sense of justice, Mary believed Madeleine intended to kill Zachariah instead of granting him immortality. On the night of the ritual, Mary intervened, stepping in front of Zachariah just as the spell was cast.
The spell transferred to Mary, and took a huge amount of time and effort to do again. This made Mary immortal and granting her freedom from death and aging. Even though she was already a witch and could already age slowly, this ensured she could live forever, as she was only a Novice witch. The newfound power corrupted her almost immediately, and she used it to manipulate others and to fool them. Meanwhile, Zachariah left vulnerable and exposed, was eventually killed by hunters who had tracked down the family due to his involvements with a vampire.
Revenge on Mary[]
For 300 years, Maddie tracked Mary across Europe. Mary reveled in her immortality, using it to amass wealth and power while leaving destruction in her wake. Maddie witnessed firsthand how Mary abused the gift meant for Zachariah and vowed to stop her.
In the early 1300's, Madeleine finally cornered Mary in Vienna, along with her coven who also had the power of immortality according to Mary, who she granted them of. Using her mother's grimoires, Madeleine found a way to reverse the immortality spell. After a bitter confrontation, Maddie cast the counter-spell, stripping Mary and her whole coven of their immortality. Now vulnerable, Maddie drained her whole coven of their blood, ultimately leading to their deaths.
Meeting Rose-Marie[]
Madeleine first met Rose-Marie in 1560, while traveling through the English countryside. Even though she had almost 500 years of experience of being a vampire hybrid, she was seeking refuge after narrowly escaping a group of vampire hunters in France. Weary and injured from her escape, she stumbled upon a small, secluded village where she had hoped to lay low and heal.
Unbeknownst to Madeleine, the village was under the protection of Rose, a twenty-two year old vampire who had lived among the humans for years, posing as a healer. Rose, who had valued her solitude, intially viewed Madeleine as a threat for her peaceful existence. However, when Maddie collapsed from her injuries near Rose's home, Rose reluctantly took her in, unwilling to leave a fellow vampire to suffer.
During the days that followed, Rose nursed her back to health. Grateful for her help and kindness, shared her story — how she had been turned, her hybrid nature and the situation about her family.
Rose saw something of herself in Maddie's vulnerability and determination to survive despite the odds. Over time, their initial wariness gave way to camaraderie as they bonded over their shared experiences as female vampires in a hostile world. Madeleine admired Rose's wisdom and poise, while Rose found Maddie's youthful curiosity and resilience refreshing.
Their bond solidified when a vampire hunter discovered Maddie's presence in the village. Rose helped Maddie, and they worked together to eliminate the threat. The experience forged a deep trust between them, and Madeleine chose to stay with Rose for a time, learning from her and offering companionship.
As they traveled together, Rose began to view Maddie as a younger sister. Madeleine, who had lost her family and felt isolated in her immortal existence, embraced Rose as her long lost sister, who reminded her of Clara. They officially decided to become adoptive siblings, declaring that family could be chosen, not born.
Meeting Trevor[]
Later on, Rose introduced Maddie to Trevor, her closest companion who was in overseas, when Maddie came to Rose for refuge. Trevor had been on the run from the Originals for years, and was skeptical of Maddie, fearing her presence would attract unnecessary attention. However, Maddie's wit and resourcefulness quickly won him over, and the three of them formed a tight-knit bond.
They navigated the dangers of the supernatural world, facing hunters, rival vampires and the looming threat of The Originals. But now that Maddie met Trevor and the three are now inseparable, she got herself into something she didn't expect-- she was now being hunted by the Originals. Their bond as a trio lasted until the late 18th century as an ambush hit them as they sleeping. Despite having a deep connection and familial bond, Rose and Trevor awoke from their sleep, and left without Madeleine, causing her to face the hunters and enemies on her own.
Despite the centuries of separation that followed, and with Rose and Trevor betraying Madeleine, they reunited in The Vampire Diaries Season 2, rebuilding the sisterly bond they had forged centuries before.
Throughout The Vampire Diaries Series[]
Season 1[]
She is only a guest role in this season, only appearing as a shadowed figure, responsible for turning Vicki Donovan, it was revealed in Season 2 when she made her first physical appearance that she had her humanity off then, that being partially the reason. The only lead they had was that someone named Danielle was responsible for Vicki's death, though they struggled to find who Danielle really was, until season 2.
Season 2[]
Madeleine arrives in Mystic Falls under mysterious circumstances, reconnecting with Rose, her adoptive sister, after centuries apart. She is initially wary of the Salvatores due to not seeing Damon in over a century and Stefan ever since Chicago in the 1920's, but becomes entangled in their fight against Klaus, who has been hunting her for centuries. Her past with Klaus is slowly revealed, showing how she once loved him but ultimately became his prisoner. She bonds with Elena, Bonnie and Caroline, becoming an older sister figure while hiding her own supernatural nature, even though they didn't initially trust each other. She also turned Caroline Forbes, after that her humanity was turned back on. This was when she went under the alias, Danielle Harper. It was also revealed that "Danielle" was actually Madeleine under an alias who turned and killed Vicki, in hopes of trying not to be found by Klaus.
Season 3[]
As Klaus builds his hybrid army, Madeleine plays a key role in trying to stop him, using her magic and werewolf heritage to weaken his hold over Tyler. She helps Stefan regain control over his bloodlust and forms a surprising friendship with Damon.
Season 4[]
Madeleine struggles with the rise of Silas, whose immortality magic conflicts with her own supernatural nature. Her friendship with Jeremy deepens as she trains him in supernatural nature, hinting at their growing feelings. She is devastated when Jeremy dies and does everything she can to bring him back though it is unsuccessful. Because of this, she goes on a killing spree because of the grief she felt. In Stand By Me, was when she became a tribrid, awakening her werewolf side. She is officially the first ever tribrid.
During the night of Jeremy's death, she bumps into Kol. Feeling guilty for not being able to bring back her best friend, she and Kol ultimately have sex and have a night full of tension. It is in that episode where their daughter gets conceived.
In the episode, The Originals, Maddie goes into labor and gives birth to their daughter after a trip to New Orleans.
Season 5[]
She attended Whitmore College alongside her close friends, Elena and Caroline. The three were upset that Bonnie wasn't there to go through it, but nonetheless they knew Bonnie wanted them to be happy and that she was proud of them.
Madeleine, Elena and Caroline were trying to fly under the radar of being vampires, especically Maddie as a newbie werewolf. After Elena's roomate, Megan, who was a brief replacement for Bonnie, died after being thrown from a window and bitten in the neck, the three caught the attention of fellow professor, Dr. Maxfield. He had a feeling something was up with them, he knew they weren't human.
He finally found the truth, that the three girls were vampires and told them to leave Whitmore College in fear of being caught. But what he didn't know was that Maddie wasn't just a vampire, she was also what he thought, a hybrid. One day, he heard Maddie doing a spell in a secluded, back area on campus. He took advantage of that, and grabbed her, taking her to his lab, eager to experiment on what they call a hybrid. He studied her DNA and found out she was also a werewolf, a tribrid. He tried to see what would happen to someone with such lineage if they turned into an Augustinian vampire. She was on the brink of turning into the second successful vampire, following Jesse. Though weak and vulnerable, Maddie killed Dr. Maxfield with the amount of power she had left in a quick spell that snapped his neck. After this, she finally had the time to break free and she rid of the Augustine serum from her system by doing a spell, and reversed the effects of the turn.
Elena heard about this and was angry at her as the boy she'd been talking to, Aaron, lost his family just like Elena did and Dr. Maxfield was the only person he had left.
After a series of intense moments with Kol, they unexpectedly grow closer, leading to a deep and passionate connection along with frequent and spontaneous hookups. Kol, seeing a future with Madeleine, proposes to her, and despite some tension, they move forward with plans for their future.
Season 6[]
Here, Kol and Maddie briefly married. However, the weight of the Mikaelson legacy and Kol's unpredictable nature causes Madeleine to flee, determined to raise their infant daughter away from that dangerous world. Though Kol is hurt by her decision, he understands her need for safety. They separated and later divorced, leaving their relationship fractured but with lingering feelings between them. As Maddie leaves New Orleans to go back to Mystic Falls with their daughter, Kol and her share a deep kiss one last time. And Maddie tells him to give the ring he bought for her to someone who deserves it, hinting at Kol's relationship and soon marriage to Davina Claire. Despite their separation, their connection remains.
Season 7[]
Madeleine is struggling with the fallout from her past, especially with the Mikaelsons. She maintains a close bond with Bonnie, Caroline, and Elena while also offering support to Stefan and Damon during the chaos with the Heretics. The gang help Maddie in raising her daughter. Her bond with Jeremy gets bigger. Though, by now, Jeremy has left Mystic Falls in search of a better life. Maddie is saddened by this, but the two decide to try long distance, frequently texting back-and-forth. This ends up working as the two eventually marry, near the end of the events of The Originals.
Season 8[]
At the end of the world looms, Madeleine becomes more invested in helping her friends survive and protect their families. Her relationship with Kol remains strained but protective. She plays a key role in the fight against the threat of the ultimate villain, aiding with her magical powers and strength to protect Mystic Falls one last time. Her relationship with Kol and the Mikaelsons reach a bittersweet conclusion. She decides she must move on from the past, focusing on her future with her daughter and Jeremy.
The Originals[]
Madeleine mostly appears as flashbacks in the series, with the exception of the early seasons, as she is frequently seen alongside Kol.
Maddie's relationship with Klaus was intense and romantic in the 13th century. She was a powerful vampire-witch hybrid, hoping to find someone like her and she did. She found Klaus. They shared a deep connection, but Madeleine was always wary of his violent and manipulative nature. She saw the darker side of him, especially as he continued to grapple with his curse and his need for control. While Klaus was genuinely in love with her, Madeleine was hesitant to fully give herself to him, understanding the danger he posed, both to her and others around him. When she tried to leave, Klaus imprisoned her, using both physical and emotional manipulation to keep her by his side. Eventually, Madeleine managed to escape, fearing Klaus would never stop searching for her.
She made a guest appearance in the final episode of The Originals, where Klaus granted her as Hope's guardian, and she promised to take care of her when the time comes.
Legacies[]
She is a respected mentor at the Salvatore School, guiding the younger students in harnessing their powers. Klaus, just before his death asked Madeleine to become his daughter's legal guardian, and to promise to train her to reach the best she can be, in which she did.
As a supportive and occasionally tough mentor, she builds meaningful connections with the students while navigating her own struggles with balancing motherhood, magic and her personal growth.

Weaknesses[]
As a Vampire[]
- Animal Blood: Animal blood, while somewhat satisfying a vampire's hunger and sustaining their undead life, will make the vampire considerably weaker than they would be if they had drank human blood, causing their physical abilities to be inferior to a human-blood-consuming vampire, making them heal much more slowly, and making their compulsion less effective.
- Broken Neck: Breaking a vampire's neck will not kill them, but it will render in a death-like state for varying amounts of time, depending on the diet and age of the person in question. The Enhanced Original vampire Alaric once snapped Damon's neck, though he recovered quickly due to the fact that he is an older vampire.
- Physical Trauma: Minor physical injuries such as gunshots, stab wounds, and broken bones will cause pain and also slow them down. However, this is momentary as they will heal completely so long as they haven't been weakened by other means such as vervain or werewolf bites.
- Vampire Bloodline: If an Original vampire dies, all vampires descended from their bloodline will slowly perish as well. Members of Klaus' bloodline were unlinked from him; thus they were spared upon his death unlike Finn, Kol, and Elijah's sirelines.
- Invitation: Due to her vampire side, she still needs to be invited in and allowed permission to enter various different properties.
As A Werewolf[]
The weaknesses of a werewolf do not affect her as she is a tribrid.
As A Witch[]
- Disbelief: The act of denying or disbelieving in one's potential could cause a witch to inadvertently suppress their magical power.
- Distraction: Denying a witch from concentrating or giving full attention to their spells, may render them ineffective. Since most spells are spoken verbally and take time to take effect, witches are vulnerable to attack before their completion. Additionally, certain spells require items, tools, and or special events during casting, therefore they can't be invoked on a mere whim.
- Emotions: A witch's magic is subject to the influence of their emotional state and may fluctuate according to them, especially when untrained. According to Sheila Bennett, strong emotions such as worry and anger can fuel a witch's power while emotions such as fear may prevent a witch from properly accessing them.
- Herbs: Ingestion of certain herbs can cause a witch to lose consciousness and prevent them from using magic for an undetermined amount of time. The Lobelia flower prevents concentration and, therefore, the practice of magic and can be used to temporarily weaken a witch.
- Huntress' Blood: The supernatural huntress' blood can suppress all magic of a witch when consumed, as well as prevent magic from working on said witch, as seen when the Armory could not perform a locator spell on Bonnie Bennett. Prolonged ingestion is toxic and ultimately leads to the death of the witch. Once black scabs start appearing on their body, the infected witch has less than a week of life. There is no known cure to combat this disease.
Most of the weaknesses that a vampire, witch and werewolf have, not all affect her as she is a tribrid. For example, since she is part werewolf, she can walk freely in the sun.
Relationships[]
Kol Mikaelson[]
Maddie and Kol's relationship was chaotic yet deeply passionate. Following his resurrection in Graduation, she confronted him about Jeremy's death, leading to an intense moment between them that sparked their relationship, during that night, they slept together.
Their whirlwind romance escalated quite quickly as in [The World Has Turned And Left Me Here], they had a brief wedding ceremony. However, their marriage crumbled due to Maddie wanting to keep her daughter safe from the enemies that loomed near the Mikaelsons. By, I Alone, they had separated, though the love between them remained complicated.
Jeremy Gilbert[]
Jeremy and Maddie always had an underlying bond, but it wasn't until after Kol that they truly found their way to each other. Their connection was cemented in Days Of Future Past when Jeremy returned to Mystic Falls, offering her stability she never had. They married off-screen between the events of the final season of The Originals, solidifying their place as a power couple within the supernatural world.
Zachariah Cadell[]
Zachariah was Maddie's first true love in the 11th century. They married young and Maddie was going to give him the power of immortality, if it wasn't for Mary Tristé for getting in the way. He died sometime in the 11th century from hunters who tracked him down due to his involvements with Maddie.
Enzo St. John[]
- Main article: Madeleine and Enzo
Maddie and Enzo had a flirtatious but deeply understanding relationship, bonded by their shared pain and history with loss. When Enzo was introduced in The Cell, he recognised Maddie's name from his time as an Augustine vampire, having heard rumours about her supernatural, and at the time hybrid nature. Though, the two got off on a rocky start as Enzo was curious yet afraid of what she was. Nevertheless their banter was sharp and full of innuendos, but underneath it was mutual respect. The two were dating during the events of late Season 6, Woke Up With a Monster until they broke up in Live Through This. They slept together on multiple occasions and it was mentioned that they had sex in the episode Stay, when Damon confronted the two. "I can't believe that Madeleine Westwood and Enzo. St John had supernatural sex, considering how you two absolutely despised eachother when you first met."
They both had moments of moral ambiguity, and Enzo often challenged Maddie's choices, particularly when she went too far with her vengeance. In season 6, after she moved back to Mystic Falls with Clara, Enzo became an ally in helping her adjust, though their friendship remained one of sarcasm and occasional exasperation.
Stefan Salvatore[]
- Main article: Madeleine and Stefan
Stefan and Maddie shared an unspoken understanding, both burdened by their pasts. In Dangerous Liaisons, they had a brief moment of vulnerability and mutual attraction, but it never developed beyond that. They remained close friends, supporting each other through heartbreak and chaos, particularly in The Cell when she helped him through his PTSD.
The two first met in 1864 when he was still a human and she was a centuries old hybrid who had returned to Mystic Falls for unknown reasons. After she turned Caroline in Brave New World, their paths crossed more often but Maddie remained weary of the Salvatores having not seen them for over a century, and presumed them as dead before they interacted face to face in her first physical appearance in Rose. In The End Of The Affair it was revealed that Maddie encountered Stefan during his ripper phase in the 1920s but chose to stay way, knowing he had to fight his demons alone.
Their relationship strengthened and rekindled over the years, particularly during season 4 when she helped him cope with his emotions after Elena's transition. However, after Jeremy's death in Down The Rabbit Hole, Maddie switched off her humanity and went on a killing spree, much similar to when Stefan was a ripper. His brother Damon tried helping but made things worse. It was ultimately Stefan who helped her out of her ripper phase, by connecting and sharing his past experiences and telling her there is so much to live for. By season 6, during the Traveler invasion they had grown even closer. Maddie went with and lived in Stefan in Georgia after all the mayhem that went down, and felt the need to be there for him, as he just lost his brother.
His death in I Was Feeling Epic devastated her, as he had been one of her longest and most steadfast friends.
Elena Gilbert[]
Elena and Maddie share a complex yet very close and respectful relationship. Initially, Elena viewed Madeleine as another dangerous supernatural being in her already chaotic life, especially when Maddie was unpredictable and detached in season 2.
However, after it was revealed that Maddie turned Caroline, Elena softened towards her, realizing that Madeleine had been trying to protect her friend rather than curse her. Their bond grew stronger in The Five when Maddie shared her knowledge about ancient supernatural history, helping Elena understand her new life as a vampire.
When Maddie lost Jeremy in season 4, Elena saw firsthand the depths of her grief and how similar their losses were. Despite some friction, especially regarding their different moral approaches, Elena ultimately and quickly trusted her, and the two became very close friends.
Damon Salvatore[]
They share a complicated history filled with a mix of rivalry, reluctant trust, and an underlying understanding of each other's darkness. Their relationship began in 1864 when Maddie first met the Salvatore brothers. Unlike Stefan, who she quickly bonded with, she and Damon constantly clashed due to their reckless and impulsive nature. When Maddie made her first appearance during Rose, she was weary of both brothers, as she hadn't seen them in centuries.
Overtime, their dynamic evolved, particularly after Jeremy's death in Down The Rabbit Hole when Maddie consumed by grief went on a killing spree, ultimately activating her werewolf side. Damon, having struggled with similar problems, tried to help her regain control, though their methods often clashed. Despite their frequent bickering, Damon has a soft spot for her and Maddie recognises his hidden depth beneath his sarcasm and cruelty, and when it came to Damon's death, Maddie was heartbroken having to lose a close friend.
Caroline Forbes[]
Maddie turned Caroline into a vampire, and this tied them together forever. Though Caroline initially resented her, they became incredibly close. Their friendship was highlighted in Best Served Cold, when Maddie helped Caroline during her pregnancy.
Isobel Flemming[]
Maddie and Isobel once shared a close but playful dynamic, much like Isobel's relationship with Katherine. As two intelligent and resourceful women, they bonded over their shared knowledge of the supernatural, with Isobel occasionally turning to Maddie for insight. Though their interactions were limited, they had an understanding that set them apart from others in Mystic Falls.
However, their relationship fractured in Isobel when Maddie realized Isobel's true motives regaring Elena. The trust they once had was lost, and while Maddie initially mourned Isobel's death, she later came to accept that the woman she had once confided in had been long gone before she died.
Despite their fallout and after Isobel's death she still remained a significant figure in her life. In Bringing Out The Dead, Maddie briefly referenced Isobel, noting that, "some people are so afraid of being powerless that they'll sell their soul to avoid it." This was a veiled remark about Isobel's choices.
Years later in season 1 of The Originals, when discussing supernatural researchers with Elijah, she offhandled mentioned that she "used to know a woman obsessed with understanding the impossible." This was likely a reference to Isobel.
Katherine Pierce[]
Both these two women had a long, complicated history, often oscillating between reluctant allies and bitter adversaries. Both fierecly independent and cunning, they recognized aspects of themselves in each other, leading to a tense but strangely understanding friendship. They first crossed paths off-screen before The Vampire Diaries began, though their first on-screen interaction occured in Katerina.
Throughout the series, they found themselves on opposing sides multiple times, especically when it came to Elena's safety. However, they occasionally teamed up when their interests aligned, such as in The Reckoning when Katherine sought Maddie's help against Klaus. Their dynamic was laced with playful flirtation, and at one point, the two got drunk together and ended up kissing-- whether it was out of genuine attraction, but it was most likely due to the fact that the two were both drunk, their relationship remained ambiguous.
Despite moments of mutual respect, Maddie never fully trusted Katherine, seeing her as too self-serving. Their final confrontation came in Gone Girl, where Maddie played a role in Katherine's downfall, showing no sympathy as she was dragged to hell.
Hope Mikaelson[]
Hope is Maddie's legal ward. She serves as a mentor, often guiding Hope through her tribrid nature, like hers. In There's Always a Loophole, Maddie helped Hope through a dangerous ritual, proving her loyalty to the Mikaelson family and sticking to her word, as Klaus told her to protect Hope after his death, in which she promised to him she would.
