Nadia Petrova (Bulgarian: Надя Петрова) is a major recurring character on The Originals, who also briefly appeared in season five of The Vampire Diaries. She is a vampire, and a de facto member of The Travelers (via her family and lineage), and is the daughter of Katerina Petrova and Markos.

Nadia is also the half-sister of Adyelya and Håkon Mikaelson; the granddaughter of Anton Petrov and Mariya Harman; and the niece of Nedyalka Petrova, the younger sister of her mother who was thought to be killed by Klaus in the 1400s. She is also an ancestor of Elena Gilbert and a descendant of Amara.

History[]

Early History[]

Katherine conceived her daughter in 1489 while she was in a secret relationship with Markos from March to April. However, when Katherine's parents realized Markos was in the village, they planned an attack on him, and succeeded in critically wounding him, which resulted in Markos barely escaping. Months later, upon discovering that their daughter Katherine was pregnant, Anton and Mariya eventually discover from Katherine, after forcing the truth from her with a truth spell, that Markos is the father to her unborn child.

Nadia was eventually born on February 9, 1490 in Bulgaria to Katherine and Markos, though Markos was unaware of this. Katherine begged her father, Anton, to allow her to hold the child just once, but he said that she had disgraced the family, and took the child away from her. Anton gave up Nadia to another family in order to keep Katherine's pregnancy and "shame" a secret; he also didn't want Markos or the Travelers to discover the child and come back for the baby or his family.

1498[]

In 1498, Nadia was only eight years old when Katherine had escaped Klaus, and found her way back to Bulgaria. Katherine searched every village and every cottage, but claimed she never managed to find Nadia, something which would haunt her for many years.

1520[]

In Northern Europe in 1520, Nadia, at the age of thirty, was looking for her mother at someone's home. She is still either a human or a relatively-new vampire.

1720[]

She was willing to pay a man in France in the year 1720 about information regarding her mother's whereabouts. This was apparently because he had witnessed Katherine killing a man just outside the Court of Versailles.

Name[]

  • Nadia (Bulgarian: Надя) is a feminine name of Ukranian origin (Надія) and a diminutive of the Slavic name Nadezhda (Надежда); both mean "hope" or "hopeful". It is a name found in various forms in Poland, Bulgaria, Russia, Serbia, Ukraine, and other Slavic countries.
  • Petrova is the feminine version of Petrov and is a very common surname in both Russia and Bulgaria. It is derived from the first name Pyotr (Пётр, Russian) or Petar (Петър, Bulgarian), which both are equivalent to English Peter.

Trivia[]

  • Nadia, Katherine, The Originals, Markos, Stefan and Silas are the only characters to speak languages other than English or Latin.
  • Nadia is the half-sister of Adyelya and Håkon Mikaelson.
  • Nadia may have had a child before she turned, to continue the Petrova line, as Katherine's entire family was massacred by Niklaus. This would make her an ancestor of both Isobel Flemming and her daughter Elena Gilbert.
  • Nadia is very protective of her mother and half-sister.
  • She was a member of The Travelers, though she claimed she never considered herself one, most likely due to her being a vampire. Both her father and her grandfather also belonged to the Travelers.
    • This changes later on, especially as her mother becomes a co-Leader.
  • Rebekah and Damon have called her 'the Devil's spawn;' this is most likely a reference to the fact that she's the daughter of Katherine, one of the main antagonists of the series as a whole.
  • Nadia was one of the few people to ever refer to or call her mother (Katherine) by her given name (Katerina); the others are Elijah, Klaus, Markos, Rose and Trevor.
  • Through her own admission, Nadia is one of the few people who truly loved Katherine, aside from Elijah and Klaus and Adyelya.
  • Unlike Katherine, Nadia never took the surname Pierce.
  • Nadia and her sister, Adyelya, have many similarities with one another.
    • Katherine gave birth to them in difficult situations (Nadia was born in the 1400s and out of wedlock, while Adyelya was born in a war-torn New Orleans).
    • Both were born on-screen (Though Adyelya was in present day and Nadia was in a flashback).
    • They were both unwanted at first; Adyelya by her parents, and Nadia by her grandfather and then by her mother 500 years later when she returned.
    • Katherine and Nadia are both born from a witch heritage (from their shared mother, Katherine, as well as their father; Klaus for Adyelya, as his mother was a witch, and Markos, a Traveler, for Nadia).
    • They were taken from their mother, Katherine, shortly after birth; Adyelya by the witches and Nadia by her grandfather. They were later reunited with Katherine after a considerable amount of time apart (6 months and 500 years, respectively).
