Penelope "Nellie" Amadea Mikaelson is a main character on Legacies and a former recurring character on The Originals, before being promoted to a main character in the fifth season. Penelope is the tribrid daughter of Niklaus Mikaelson and Juliette Constantine and the younger half-sister of Hope Mikaelson. She is the granddaughter of Ansel, Esther Mikaelson, Edward Constantine, and Penelope Gardiner and the step-granddaughter of Mikael. She is the niece of Freya, Finn, Elijah, Kol, Rebekah, and Henrik Mikaelson and the grand-niece of Dahlia. She is the adoptive younger sister of Marcel Gerard and a distant relative of Cary. She is the cousin of Freya and Mathias' unborn son; Rebekah and Matt's son, Sebastian Mikaelson-Donovan; Elijah and Acantha's son, Cassian Ravenwood; Kol and Millie's daughter, Jacqueline Mikaelson; Henrik and Davina's daughter, Karina Mikaelson; and Freya and Keelin's son, Finn Mikaelson II.

Penelope was named after her late maternal grandmother, Penelope Gardiner, by her mother. Her middle name is Amadea, chosen as it's a virtue name like Hope, and she takes the surname of her father's side.

Penelope was conceived in The Vampire Diaries season four episode Bring It On, and it was revealed that Juliette was pregnant four episodes later in The Originals. She was then born in The Originals season one episode From a Cradle to a Grave. As a result of her unique heritage, she is the world's second vampire-werewolf-witch hybrid. She inherited both her werewolf gene and vampire legacy from her father, who is the original vampire-werewolf hybrid, while her witch legacy comes from both of her parents, with her father being the son of the Original Witch. Through her father's Original Vampire lineage, Penelope is vampire royalty.

Penelope is a member of the Mikaelson Family, the Constantine Family, and the Alden Family. Penelope is by birthright, a member of the North East Atlantic Pack and the Nyström Family.

Season One[]

In There's a Place Where Your Dreams Came True, Penelope is seen with Hope as she's talking with Alaric about the urn when Lizzie and Josie both burst through the doors, having returned home. After Lizzie makes her first wish, Penelope is transported to a reality where she and Hope were never enrolled in school and both have transitioned into vampires after Klaus' death. When the Saltzman's find the sisters and take them to the school, Lizzie can sense that they're seriously considering enrolling and wishes the reality away. In the next reality, Hope and Penelope's father founded the boarding school instead, resulting in it being called the Mikaelson Boarding School for the Young & Gifted and them being students at said boarding school. She, Hope, Kaleb, Jed, and Pedro responded to Lizzie exposing magic at Mystic Falls High School. However, Lizzie feels like she is back at square one with her unhappiness wishing inadvertently for an apocalyptic reality where supernaturals are hunted and Hope and Penelope were never born resulting in Klaus having no humanity.

Realizing the gravity of her mistake, Lizzie then recalls all of her wishes by wishing that Ablah never went to Malivore. Ablah, before returning Lizzie tells her without her memories and growth as a person, that Josie will still end up dead by Lizzie's hands. Ablah states that this will perhaps happen directly by Lizzie's hands or as a result of the merge. Although Lizzie pleads with Ablah to keep her memories and growth, Ablah returns Lizzie to the moment before her first wish, ultimately erasing Lizzie's memories of the events.

Name[]

  • Penelope is a feminine given name derived from the name of Homer's Odyssey and means "weaver".[2]
  • Amadea is the feminine form of Amadeus, which is derived from the Latin words ama - the imperative of the word amare, meaning "to love" - and deus, meaning "god". Thus Amadea means either "love of God" or "one who loves God".[3]
  • Mikaelson is of Scandinavian origin and means "son of Mikael".

Trivia[]

  • Sophie described Penelope as "one of Nature's loopholes" in The Originals.
  • During Juliette's pregnancy, Penelope had various nicknames.
    • In Fruit of the Poisoned Tree, her aunt nicknames her "The Demon Spawn" and called her "My Little Niece" and she called her "Mikaelson Miraculous Baby 2" in Sinners and Saints. After Penelope's birth, Rebekah calls her "Princess" in a bedtime story.
    • Sophie and Tyler both referred to her as "The Hybrid Baby" and Celeste called her "The Witch".
    • Klaus called her "Littlest Witch" in From a Cradle to a Grave, as a reference to the nickname that he gave to Juliette; "Little Witch".
  • Klaus mentioned in Reigning Pain in New Orleans, that Hope and Penelope are the only thing that matters to him.
  • In Moon Over Bourbon Street, Elijah expresses his wish that his nieces would inherit their mothers' "everything".
  • Due to the unique nature of her conception, Penelope's birth was a Nexus Vorti, a miracle event that the witches can draw upon for great power.
  • She shares some traits with her aunt, Freya:
    • Both of their births were against nature (Esther was infertile and being a vampire, Klaus normally cannot have children).
    • Penelope, alongside Hope, was given to her aunt Rebekah by her parents to keep her safe, and Freya was taken away by her aunt Dahlia.
    • Both were separated from their parents under the pretense of death, while only a select few knew what really happened to them; only Esther, Finn, and Dahlia knew that Freya didn't die of the plague, and only Hayley, Juliette, Klaus, Elijah, Ansel, and Rebekah knew that Hope and Penelope didn't die shortly after their births.
  • Rebekah was the first to refer to Penelope as a "tribrid" instead of a "hybrid".
  • Penelope shares a few similarities with Nadia Petrova:
    • Both of their mothers gave birth to them in difficult situations.
    • They were both born from a witch heritage.
    • They were taken from their mothers shortly after birth, Penelope by the witches and Nadia by her grandfather. They were later reunited with them after a considerable amount of time apart; six months and 500 years, respectively.
    • Both of their last names come from a male first name. "Mikaelson" comes from Penelope's grandfather "Mikael" and "Petrova" comes from the name "Pyotr" or "Petr".

Tropes[]

  • Accents Aren't Hereditary - Penelope's paternal family all speak in European accents due to their Norse background, she speaks in an American accent like her mother.
  • Birth/Death Juxtaposition - Almost as soon as she's born, her mother Juliette is killed by Monique. Subverted in that Juliette woke up in transition, due to dying while Penelope's blood was still inside her.
  • Hybrid Power - Penelope has demonstrated magic abilities from her witch side and healing abilities from her vampire side though latter power is slower than a full vampire's healing factor.
  • Sins of Our Fathers - As Klaus notes, Hope and Penelope have 'inherited' all of his enemies by being his daughters.
  • Uneven Hybrid - Due to the fact that Penelope inherits the witch gene from both of her parents, due to her paternal grandmother being a witch, but only inherits the werewolf and vampire genes from her father. Technically making Penelope more witch than werewolf or vampire.
