The Shadowbind Amulet is a powerful, enchanted relic created by Madeleine Westwood in 1695 to protect against soul enslavement, compulsion and supernatural control.
Forged with dark magic and infused with her own tribrid blood, the amulet grants the wearer immunity to mind control, anchors their soul to prevent magical possession, and can even offer a resurrection loophole-- at a terrible cost.
However, the amulet comes with dangerous side effects. It feeds off the wearer's life force, corrupts their mind with prolonged use, and if broken, can release unpredictable dark energy, corrupting the user's mind and soul. In this state, the user enters a dazed, trance-like state, their morality and empathy completely stripped away. They become a being of pure destruction, driven by an insatiable need to wreak havoc and to feed and absorb dark magic. This condition is often compared to a vampire who has turned off their humanity-- but exponentially worse, as the user is completely detached from reality and loses all sense of self.
Restoring a person from this corruptive trance is extremely difficult and dangerous though not impossible. The user becomes an alter ego of themselves, nearly impossible to reason with. In order to purge the dark magic and break the influence of the amulet, a powerful ritual must be performed.
- The afflicted person must be trapped in a containment circle infused with celestial magic
- Four witches must chant an incantation in unison, channeling their combined power to sever the connection btween the dark magic and the user.
"Tenebris ex hoc corpore evanescat, Ligare malum, restituere animam, Quatuor corda, unum vinclum, Amuletum absorbeat et servet!"
- If done correctly, the dark energy is forcibly drawn from the user and sealed back into the amulet.
Failure to complete the ritual entirely or successfully can result in the user remaining permanently trapped in their corrupted state until they die and the magic goes back in the amulet for another person to conquer. The witches also lose their power, and the dark magic the user has takes it, resulting in ultimate death.
Despite it's risks, the amulet has played a significant role in the supernatural war between witches, vampires and hybrids across centuries.
Origin and Creation[]
The amulet was crafted in the late 17th century by Madeleine, sought to protect herself and others from supernatural enslavement. After witnessing someone go through the brutal mind control magic used by the Mikaelsons, witches, and even demons, she decided to create an artifact that would make the wearer untouchable.
The forge the amulet, Madeleine combined:
- Her own [tribrid] blood (to bind it to supernatural beings)
- The ashes of a phoenix (for resurrection)
- Dark Obsidian (Stone said to store power)
- A spell in an ancient tongue
This ritual almost drained the life out of her, and she warned that using the amulet recklessly would have dire consequences.

Resurrection Tether: Allows the wearer to return from death-- if a life is sacrificed.

("Blood of the demon, bind the soul, free the will. Protect my body, my mind, my soul.")
Davina's Enchantment (in French):
"Sang et ombre, protégé mon esprit. Laisse-moi être libre."
("Blood and shadow, protect my mind. Let me be free.")

Trivia[]
- Kol Mikaelson tried to use it despite Maddie's warnings. He believed it would make him unstoppable, but Maddie said: "Power like this doesn't come without a cost, Kol. Is this really what you want our daughter to witness? You may not be around that often but you are still her father, and you mean everything to her. She can't be herself without you, she loves you." A teary-eyed Kol, holds the amulet up to his face, just as the amulet is about to affect, Maddie pulls it away from his grasp.
- Klaus Mikaelson attempted to destroy the amulet after he tried to use it, but instead it absorbed his hyrbdi energy, making it even more powerful.
- Davina Claire used the amulet briefly in an attempt to resist The Ancestors' control, she almost succeeded, but it rejected her, causing magical backlash
- Clarissa Mikaelson used the amulet in Legacies to break Malivore's hold on supernatural beings, severing his ability to erase them from existance.
- The amulet was last seen in Mystic Falls. It was hidden by Clarissa Mikaelson now in the hands of high security guards. Davina and Maddie also check up on it from time to time to make sure it never ends up in the wrong hands.
